Dental nursing is a profession that gives individuals the chance to learn or discover something new everyday. It provides fulfilment and job satisfaction as well as a good work/life balance. A great many dental nurses are passionate about their job and this is often tied to a desire to teach, lead or help others.
A training programme such as the newly approved Advanced Dental Nursing Apprenticeship provides the opportunity for existing dental nurses to become involved in helping and teaching new recruits. By playing this important part in the training of new dental nurses, current members of the dental team can enrich the learners experience by passing on essential practical skills and helping to develop interpersonal and communication abilities. Qualified staff can guide learners in the ways and ethos of the practice, helping apprentices to become confident and valuable members of the team. The added advantage is that while teaching an apprentice, existing staff benefit from refreshing their own memory, strengthening their own skills and discovering new ideas.
The apprenticeship programme has been carefully structured and developed by leading employers within the industry. It is delivered by Healthcare Learning in partnership with Barnet and Southgate College and is designed to incorporate both the practical dental nursing skills along and theoretical knowledge required for candidates to carry out their role competently. Apprentices become part of the existing dental team and are taught, encouraged and supported by their colleagues and employers. This has a way of making everyone feel valued and appreciated, enhancing working relationships and offering a sense of belonging for apprentices. Furthermore, practices can train capable dental nurses with very little interruption to the business.
Over the 18-month course, apprentices are required to study the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing. This qualification is equivalent to 2 A levels and is conveniently delivered through high-quality live webinars, interactive eLearning and online assessments from Healthcare Learning. With on-going support, candidates are required to complete 15 mandatory units, a small number of classroom-based workshops as well as on-going assessments that take place at the dental practice.
Throughout the apprenticeship, programme candidates will benefit from a course mentor and have access to comprehensive training support such as the Dental Nurse Education Zone (DNEZ) provided by Healthcare Learning. This offers additional help and resources needed for them to complete their studies and excel in their role as a dental nurse. On completion, apprentices will then be able to register with the GDC and begin a professional career in dentistry.
The apprenticeship programmes are a great way of attracting new talent, engaging current team members and are a very cost-effective way to train staff too. The Government is backing apprenticeship programmes whole-heartedly and are ploughing funding and financial incentives into the schemes.
