The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) is delighted to be supporting a new campaign launched by HPV Action on Thursday 14th December 2017 to tackle awareness of the HPV disease in men.

Jabs for the Boys aims to educate the public on the risks presented by HPV and the benefits of vaccination, with a wealth of information and advice available for boys, parents of boys and adult men on the website (www.jabsfortheboys.uk).

HPV Action estimates that around 2,000 cancer cases and 48,000 genital wart cases are caused by HPV in men every year. While schoolgirls are entitled to a free vaccination and women over 25 have access to free cervical screenings, boys are excluded by the NHS and men don’t have any form of screening programme for HPV-related diseases.

Helen Minnery, BSHDT President, commented:

“It is crucial for the healthcare profession to help raise awareness of the dangers of HPV among everyone, including boys and men. Only with improved public education and increased uptake of the vaccination will we start to see a change in the statistics. The BSDHT is more than happy to support such a great campaign as Jabs for the Boys, and we would encourage everyone to promote the fantastic website to patients, friends and family.”
