Bringing dental care to Central America
UncategorisedPosted by: Dental Design 15th June 2018
Dr Will Hanks from Rodericks Dental’s Kyrle Street Dental Practice in Hereford shares his experience of working with The Peace and Hope Trust to deliver life-changing dental care in Nicaragua.
“There is massive dental need in the Eastern region of Nicaragua – the people are generally very poor farmers or fishermen, living in very remote villages along the Rio Grande de Matagalpa river with no access to dental services.
“The vast majority of our work involves providing general and oral health education to these communities. The desire for pain relief is immense and I can extract up to 100 teeth a day; nearly all of which are hopelessly broken down and could not be saved even with the facilities we have at home.
“Prevention is therefore really important and we take hundreds of toothbrushes and educational tools with us – Rodericks was kind enough to connect us with the group’s supplier, Henry Schein, who generously offered great discounts on local aesthetic and donated items for our visits.
“With such high need in these areas of Nicaragua, we are always looking for other dentists and dental nurses who might like to get involved. It’s a very rewarding experience.”
