The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) is well established as theprofessional body for all things related to dental implants in the UK. It is an avid supporter of professional education and has always encouraged continued innovation in the field so that dental teams can deliver ever-more effective treatments to a wider range of patients.

Its own educational events epitomise this ethos for continued learning and this year’s ADI Focus Meeting will bring innovation to the fore. To be held on Saturday 17 November at the ICC in Birmingham, the one-day event is entitled “Innovations in Dental Implantology” and will provide insight into the latest and greatest products, concepts and technologies in the dental implant arena.

The speaker line-up will include internationally renowned professionals who are at the very top of their game. They will be sharing their extensive knowledge and experience with delegates to help enhance their own understanding of a wide range of topics, while also demonstrating the innovations currently being utilised all over the world. Among the outstanding speakers will be Dr Costa Nicolopoulos.

Dr Nicolopoulos has been practising dentistry since 1984, having received his dental degree with distinction from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Among other awards, he received the Gold Medal of the Dental Association of South Africa for most outstanding graduate and he went on to complete specialist training in maxillofacial and oral surgery. He has since focused mostly on dental implants, of which he has placed more than 40,000 in his career so far. More recently in 2012, Dr Nicolopoulos established the SameDay Dental Implants Clinic in Dubai, where he is also the co-director of the Branemark Osseointegration Centre.

Dr Nicolopoulos will be presenting a session entitled “Immediate Loading with Permanent Restorations Within 7 Days – Fact or Myth?” at the ADI Focus Meeting in November. About the topic, he says:

“Successful treatment using immediate loading protocols affords many benefits for the clinician and the patient. Both save time and money, making the professional workflow more efficient and profitable while making treatment more accessible for patients with busy lives.

“However, there are several challenges to face when immediately loading dental implants with the permanent restorations. The first is achieving high enough implant mechanical stability at the time of dental implant placement, known as primary stability, is a critical challenge for immediate loading with permanent restorations. This is because the restorations will be in occlusion, at least to some clinically significant extent, straightaway. The second challenge is maintaining soft and hard tissue stability in the long-term.

“My lecture will discuss different methods that can be used to overcome both these potential problems. I’ll also consider possible management techniques for when soft tissue changes do occur. I am very excited to share our protocol for immediate loading with permanent restorations with first-class implant clinicians at this ADI Focus Meeting.”

For delegates attending Dr Nicolopoulos’ session, you’ll also find out more about the appropriate number, length and width of dental implants for encouraging successful treatment when immediate loading with permanent restorations. The lecture will go on to cover the advantages of the concept in more detail, the rate of treatment acceptance and satisfaction among patients, as well as the surgical and prosthodontic techniques involved. Finally, Dr Nicolopoulos will consider various potential complications and how to manage them effectively.

The remaining speakers presenting throughout this ADI Focus Meeting will be Ziv Mazor (Israel), Karl Ulrich Volz (Switzerland), Anas Aloum (Abu Dhabi), Rana Al-Ralaki (UK) and Howard Gluckman (South Africa). Their forward-thinking approaches to dental implantology combined with their passion for excellence creates an ideal recipe for inspirational lectures and a learning experience that is truly second-to-none. There will also be the chance to explore some of the innovations introduced in lectures among the trade exhibition, which will feature an array of dental implant product suppliers.

Further still, there will be every opportunity to catch up with peers and colleagues, make new friends and strengthen professional relationships throughout the industry. Dr Nicolopoulos adds:

“I predict that this ADI Focus Meeting will be a great platform for highly experienced presenters to share clinically relevant implant dentistry innovations with delegates. I encourage dental implant colleagues to attend so that, at the end of the meeting, they can return to their practices with relevant, take-home information that they can apply to their protocols in order to optimise dental implant treatment for their patients.”
