Visitors to the BDIA Dental Showcase arrived excited and left feeling inspired after an engaging educational programme that matched the enthusiasm and passion that transcends throughout the dental industry. Connecting with colleagues from up and down the UK while extending their skills, delegates gathered for two very exciting lectures sponsored by CALCIVIS® in the Dental Update Theatre.
The first was on Friday 5th October, when Professor Nigel Pitts delivered a presentation entitled “Caries Management in Practice”, where he provided an update on the best evidence-based approaches to managing caries in the dental practice. As the leader of the GCCM Global Collaboratory for Caries Management Initiative and the chair of the ACFF Alliance for Cavity Free Future, Professor Pitts provided an international overview of modern cariology. He described the evolution of the International Caries Classification and Management Systems and covered the “4D Caries Management” approach, which is currently being taken forward by CCI CariesCare International.
As he reviewed cariology from “Back to the Future to the latest technological developments,” Professor Pitts considered the importance of caries activity assessment and enlightened delegates to the use of bioluminescence to detect active demineralisation. He described the CALCIVIS imaging system and how biotechnology is applied to the device before highlighting the benefits of the system to both clinicians and patients for identifying caries at the very earliest stages.
Professor Pitts also asked delegates to consider the recent consensus in “Paying for Health in Dentistry” and delivered news from the latest ACFF Policy Labs regarding the creation and implementation of an acceptable prevention-based dental payment system.
This opportunity enabled delegates to really get up to date on the preventive management of dental disease at a national and global level. Professor Pitts was certainly an engaging speaker and he allowed time for a question and answer session from the floor.
On Saturday 6th October, Dental Hygienist and Therapist Melonie Prebble took to the stage and presented a fascinating session called “Harnessing the power of biotechnology to transform the future of preventive dentistry.” Melonie demonstrated her commitment to the profession as she involved the audience in a discussion about the influences and factors relevant to the prevention, early diagnosis and minimally invasive approach to dental caries and erosion.
She discussed the CALCIVIS imaging system and described how this revolutionary device uses a photoprotein that produces bioluminescence in the presence of free calcium ions as they are released from actively demineralising tooth surfaces. Melonie told delegates about the predictability and reliability of the system and how it enables practitioners to identify active demineralisation on the tooth surface with no clinical signs. Glowing images lit the screen as she described how seeing a visual map of demineralisation at the chair side can help clinicians to confirm their findings, improve patient understanding and communication, and most importantly, drive them towards disease free dentition.
Melonie said: “Patient engagement is phenomenal with the CALCIVIS imaging system. It is much easier for them to see and understand what is going on, which motivates them to improve their oral hygiene habits, modify their behaviour and seriously consider remineralisation solutions.”
With her experience and passion for prevention and minimally invasive dentistry, Melonie underlined the value of identifying patients that are at higher risk of dental caries and erosion. She examined the virtues of the CALCIVIS imaging system as a tool to aid detection, treatment planning and implementation before she asked delegates to consider teamwork – an institution she strongly advocates – and what it means in terms of productivity, patient satisfaction and success.
Once again, Melonie Prebble was an interesting speaker and willingly answered all the questions posed by the audience. As well as this, delegates could visit the CALCIVIS exhibition stand on the trade floor where they were able to watch live demonstrations, speak to a team of experts and ask questions on a one to one basis.
The main aim of preventive dental care is to prevent decay and disease before it occurs and to provide patients with the instructions and motivation they need to facilitate effective home-care to maintain long-term, good oral health.
Consequently, by offering innovative technology that supports and assists practitioners with early detection and also helps to educate patients, delegates could see that the CALCIVIS imaging system is a significant step forward in the preventive, minimally invasive approach.
CALCIVIS was proud to support these lectures, which were popular and well attended. However, if you were unable to get to the BDIA Dental Showcase this year, you are welcome to contact the CALCIVIS team who are willing to provide further information.
