In modern practice, continuing education and learning are essential to ensuring that you stay up to date with the latest research, developments, techniques, equipment and material innovations. Dentistry is constantly evolving, after all; if you don’t keep up with the flow, it can be very easy to fall behind.

How to find educational events that suit you

The big question is how do you choose which courses, training events and lectures to attend? There are now so many options available to pick from that it can be difficult to know which ones to go for, and whether they will be relevant and beneficial to your practice. There are the obvious ones, of course, that you will need to undertake as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – for instance, disinfection and decontamination, radiography and radiation protection, and medical emergencies. But beyond your CPD obligations, you are free to participate in whatever education you so desire. If you’re not sure which courses, training and lectures would best suit your clinical and personal needs and preferences, it might benefit you to put together a plan, speak to colleagues, or even just try out a couple of events and see how you go.

Put together a plan

Indeed, in a similar way you would approach your Personal Development Plan (PDP) for your CPD, you could try putting together a programme based on your interests, areas you would like to improve upon, and skills you wish to develop. Simply by identifying topics and establishing time frames, you will find that you are naturally able to identify potential pathways you could go down – from there, it’s a matter of refining your choices and narrowing your options. That’s where your colleagues and peers come in!

Speak to other professionals

If you can speak to other practitioners about their experiences of courses, training and lectures that they’ve been to, it might help you to rule out or prioritisecertain ones. They might even be able to put you in contact with trainers or experts in the field who will be able to give you more information, or suggest educational events that you’d not even considered.

Trial and error

Failing that, book on to a course or lecture and give it a go! You will either like it and learn from it, or you won’t. If the latter, you can cut your losses and will know not to go down that path again in the future, but if you find that it’s for you then you can search for similar events.

Where to look

As for where to look for suitable courses, training and lectures, there are a number of pathways you can take and platforms you can turn to that will point you in the right direction.

Social media

Sites such as Facebook and Twitter are a great way of discovering the latest in the world of education, as there are a number of groups and pages available that you can join that regularly post about upcoming events. Manufacturers, trainers, associations and educational providers will also have their own dedicated pages that you can follow or ‘like’, so if there’s something in particular that you’re looking out for you can find it easily all in one place.

Emails, flyers and newsletters

Likewise, if there’s a certain provider, trainer or manufacturer that you’re interested in, sign up to their mailing list to receive their flyers and newsletters, so that you’re kept up to date with all the latest information throughout the year. It also means that if something does come up that takes your fancy, you can book on straightaway and avoid disappointment.

Exhibitions and Shows

Renowned for its jam-packed educational programme comprised of interactive sessions, informative lectures and essential CPD, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is a must-attend event for any dental professional looking to learn new skills and update their knowledge. The two-day show features hours upon hours of learning opportunities delivered by the very best in the profession, providing an extensive and eclectic educational experience. Whatever you’re looking for, you are sure to find it at the upcoming British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2019. Plus, while you’re there, you are sure to meet likeminded individuals with similar learning interests as yourself that you can swap information with.
