The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2019 will offer all members of the dental team various opportunities to learn, gain enhanced CPD and network with some of the best in the business. The highly anticipated BACD Aesthetic & Digital Dentist Theatre will provide a two-day lecture programme focused on cosmetic and digital dentistry, providing exciting insights into the field with a wealth of advice shared by leading experts.

Among the lecturers will be Mark Hughes, Senior Partner and Aesthetic Dentist at Harley Street Dental Studio. Advocating the benefits of GDP orthodontics, he is also keen to help professionals minimise the risks of potential complications.

“There are many advantages afforded by short-term orthodontics for GDPs,” he says. “Firstly, these treatments expand the repertoire of the GDP, allowing us to offer more treatment options to our patient base and helping our practices to grow. Secondly, they open up the world of multidisciplinary treatment planning and thus more ‘comprehensive’ treatment planning. By carrying out a part of the treatment ourselves, it removes the need for referral to a specialist orthodontist in a lot of cases. It also eliminates the need to communicate the exact goal of treatment (from a positional and functional point of view), which is a huge challenge. Finally, if we wish to practice in a more ‘minimal’ way, but still achieve excellent aesthetic results for adult patients, then orthodontic intervention is often vital.

“For the restorative dentist, it is incredibly important to be in control of the aesthetics and function of the patient’s smile to be able to achieve the best final outcomes. Sometimes, effectively communicating our aims and obtaining the desired result through an orthodontic referral results in suboptimal results. So to add these treatments to our skill set is vital in my opinion. It makes the whole experience for the patient more seamless, quicker and less frustrating in many cases.

“Like any ‘new’ treatments being undertaken, there are challenges relating to GDP orthodontics. The most important of these is that as GDPs, we have a duty to sufficiently expand our training and knowledge of orthodontics in order to safely and effectively deliver treatment. It is absolutely vital that we do not treat beyond our capabilities or skills. A foundation knowledge of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment should be undertaken and a risk to be aware of is that many companies are ‘selling’ appliances to us without offering adequate base knowledge or on-going support and mentorship.”

Mark will present “Using Invisalign in complex multidisciplinary cases – pre-restorative alignment – when, how and why?” in the BACD Aesthetic & Digital Dentist Theatre. About his session, he comments:

“I’ll be explaining my journey into orthodontics with regards to my treatment planning, demonstrating the types of cases that are appropriate as well as those that should be referred to our specialist orthodontist colleagues. I will show a host of case examples and outcomes that I have achieved. I hope to open delegates’ eyes as to the possibilities of orthodontics and help them gain the confidence to begin planning and delivering comprehensive dentistry.

“Even if a GDP is not going to carry out these treatments themselves, it is still important to understand how orthodontic intervention – particularly before carrying out restorative procedures – can be of huge benefit to patients in the long-term. My session will provide the information they need, helping them to avoid early failure of restorations and indeed avoid much more invasive and complex treatments in many cases.”
