Due to an ageing world population, modern dental professionals will be used to treating a varied patient list comprised of individuals from a variety of different generations. But should we be treating all of these individuals with the same approach?

The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) has set out to address this topic at its highly anticipated Oral Health Conference (OHC) 2019.

This year’s theme is ‘The Generation Gain: Challenges and Opportunities’ and aims to educate delegates on the importance of understanding different attitudes among patients from different generations, their individual needs and how professionals should take these into account when providing care.

Educational opportunities

The OHC has always offered delegates a rich and varied educational programme. Taking comments from last year’s delegates on board, this year the BSDHT has made every effort to ensure that the conference is bigger and better than ever before, offering all who attend the chance to gain up to 11 hours of enhanced CPD.

The OHC has something for all the dental team at all stages of their journey, whether they are highly experienced or starting out as students.

As the focus of this year’s conference is on generational differences, many of the educational seminars and speeches given by leading lights in the industry will be related to this topic, providing broad, multi-pronged coverage of the question at hand whilst offering a versatile array of perspectives. These sessions will impart knowledge designed to be applicable to people’s day-to-day workflows, meaning that professionals can implement what they learn right away.

Many of the sessions will focus on important, highly relevant clinical issues such as how to recognise peri-implantitis and provide composite restorations whilst still maintaining occlusal stability. Other sessions take a more emotional or broad approach and delve into subjects such as how to use compassion as a tool for resilience or how dental hygienists and dental therapists can work together to help reduce the number of cases of dementia through promoting better oral health.

What’s on the board?

Aside from these exceptional educational opportunities, the OHC also sets the stage for a wonderful exhibition of dental companies, all of whom will gather at ICC Wales to show delegates their latest products and developments. This is a stellar chance for those visiting the show to get up to date with their favourite suppliers, as well as discover new products and services that can make their professional lives easier.

These companies will also be offering their own educational breakfast workshops, lunchtime symposia and break time Demo Zone sessions – perfect for people who want to continue learning apart from the core series of sessions and who want to see some of the latest innovations in the industry at work.

The ever-popular exhibition treasure hunt will also be making a return this year. Last year’s prizes were collectively worth £800, so this is a great chance to find some fabulous prizes whilst taking the time to explore everything that the manufacturers in the profession have to offer.

Time to mix and mingle!

In the dental profession it’s important to meet likeminded individuals, especially if you want to broaden your circles and discuss important topics with those who are in the know. The OHC 2019 is an ideal environment to reach out and meet new people as well as re-connect with colleagues in a casual and fun social environment.

As well as having the chance to explore the exhibition together and connect with people during workshops, OHC 2019 also has a dinner and dance on the Friday night (purchased ticket only) that is an excellent excuse to don your best party wear, let your hair down and head to the dance floor to make some new connections.

Points mean prizes

The BSDHT is committed to celebrating remarkable individuals within the field. That’s why at OHC 2019 there will be a number of awards presented to celebrate individuals who have gone the extra mile in their roles.

Not only will the show see an individual crowned Student of the Year, but there is also the highly esteemed poster competition – a chance for individuals to share their research and be recognised within the wider field.

A 2018 delegate said, “I have never been to an OHC before but I was very pleased and impressed … the CPD lectures and talks were very useful and the range of speakers was impressive. I fully enjoyed the day and wish I had attended for both days. I will definitely be attending the next one.”
