A sense of community affords several benefits for individuals. One study suggested a link between being a part of a group and increased life satisfaction.[i]Another associated a sense of belonging with reduced emotional distress and enhanced mental health.[ii]

In order to make the most of the advantages available in dentistry, it’s important to join a community most relevant to the type of treatment you provide or wish to develop your skills in. Being part of an organisation can provide professionals with an invaluable source of information, support and comradery.

Support

It’s no secret that modern dentistry has become a pretty stressful industry. As such, we all need a shoulder to lean on from time to time and it can be very comforting to know that you have a group of colleagues behind you. You might need advice regarding a particularly complex case or help in dealing with a difficult patient. Alternatively, you may just need to speak to like-minded people who face similar challenges to you every day. Being able to turn to peers who understand where you’re coming from and who may have been in a similar situation to you, can provide the reassurance and confidence you need.

Updates

Belonging to a community within the dental profession puts you firmly on the grapevine for all the latest information. Whether there is a new material on the market, a technological upgrade available or a new training course that’s gaining traction, you will likely be among the first to know about it. Such a group may also bring any new regulations or guidelines in the field to the attention of its members, along with its advice on how to comply. This can be a great help in making sure you always operate best practice protocols, ensuring the quality of care you deliver to patients.

Network

Actively participating in a dental group or association is also a great way of expanding your professional network. It gets your name out there, helping to boost your reputation and that of your practice(s). Regardless of whether you’re new to the field and looking for a mentor or highly experienced and aiming to build your referral network, joining an established community within your field could be the catalyst you need to grow. As part of a group, you may also be introduced to and offered discounts with members of the trade, expanding your network to incorporate suppliers and benefiting your business with more cost-effective purchases.

Career development

When you join a group, you often gain access to further education and training courses. Many training opportunities provided, supported or promoted through a trusted organisation will be of the highest quality. There is also a chance that you’ll be able to learn from some of the biggest names in that field, who you would otherwise find it difficult to see. All of this serves to help individuals enhance their knowledge and skills within a safe and productive environment. It also offers a chance to gain inspiration and take away fresh ideas for the improvement of both clinical and business practises.

Further still, attending these educational events enables you to meet with colleagues and friends in person and build your professional relationships. This can help to strengthen your network, in turn broadening opportunities for finding a new job, recruiting for your practice or establishing new professional connections for the future.

Putting the spotlight on dental implantology

Within the field of dental implantology, all the benefits of belonging to a dedicated community can make a significant difference to clinicians. Being able to constantly access support, advice, the latest information and training relevant to you will make your career development easier and more focused.

The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) is the UK’s largest professional body committed to the field of dental implants. It is a community of more than 2,200 active members, who all share a passion for excellent implant dentistry. Among the many skill development opportunities available are the ADI Study Clubs – which are free to members – and the ADI Masterclasses. Coming up at the end of this year will also be the ADI Members’ National Forum, which encourages members to come together to share research, ideas and innovation, inspiring new standards in the field and is free to attend.

In addition, the ADI Members’ Only Facebook Group is an invaluable source of information and support for individuals who need advice from trusted peers. Members can post case photos, ask about products, share regulatory information or find colleagues to refer to in a quick and convenient way.

Join in

The benefits of joining a professional community are clear, regardless of where clinicians have reached in their careers. Why not see what groups there are in your field and consider getting involved?
