Another educational triumph for the BACD Annual Conference 2019

For the sixteenth year running, delegates at the BACD Annual Conference 2019 were treated to world-class dental education in the form of inspiring lectures, seminars and workshops – topped off with the chance to explore a bustling tradeshow exhibition. This fantastic three-day event set the perfect stage for delegates to share their passion for high quality cosmetic dentistry. Held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London, the Annual Conference focused on “Delivering Excellence: Tradition vs. Innovation”, providing something of interest to every member of the dental team.
Getting hands on
Kicking off the Annual Conference was a full day of exciting workshops that took place simultaneously and presented an opportunity for clinicians to get hands-on with the latest dental technology and materials. Dr Oliver Harman led an interactive and informal session on “The 16 Things You Need to Know To Be A Cosmetic Dentist”, where he discussed the pathways of progression that the BACD offers through its prestigious Accreditation Programme.
Among the many other workshop speakers was dental technician, Mr Philip Reddington, who demonstrated how to hand finish/customise ceramic restorations. While Dr Paolo Nardinocchi’s session focused on the BOPT (Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique), Dr Michaela Sehnert discussed digital smile design concepts in detail.
Commenting on Dr Sehnert’s session, Dr Vinnie Thandi said: “Great, informative lecture about digital dentistry and its application to Invisalign. The speaker was very passionate and engaging. I felt I learned many new concepts about Invisalign and iTero to apply to my clinical work.”
Dr Josef Kunkela and dental technician, Mr Daniel Dunka, also showed delegates how to achieve highly aesthetic restorations using CAD/CAM technology. Meanwhile, Dr Elliot Mechanic explained how to create high quality temporary dental restorations by looking at the basics of impression taking, bite registration, diagnosis and smile design.
Moreover, Dr Tony Rotondo travelled from as far away as Australia to deliver a sold-out workshop that provided delegates the opportunity to explore the techniques he uses to build up anterior teeth with composite resin.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my morning learning about composite veneer techniques with Tony – so many great tips to take away and a very engaging speaker!” said Dr Harriet Morse.
Thought-provoking discussions
President of the BACD, Dr Rahul Doshi, launched the second day of the Annual Conference with an inspiring speech, before he handed over to rugby legend, Lewis Moody. He spoke about the value of teamwork in achieving your goals, embodying many of the ideals and themes of the event.
The rest of the morning was devoted to a lecture with Dr Mauro Fradeani, who discussed the fundamentals required to achieve a satisfactory, functional and long-lasting aesthetic outcome from prosthetic rehabilitations of natural dentition. In the afternoon, Dr Eric Van Dooren explored aesthetic dentistry in general, with a specific focus on periodontal procedures around teeth and dental implants. He said:
“I don’t think we should change the way we work completely. A full digital workflow doesn’t work for me, but modern technology can help both dentists and dental technicians better visualise cases.”
On the second day of the Annual Conference, Dr Rotondo took the stage again to discuss the management of interdisciplinary cases where an orthodontist and a restorative dentist have to work together to resolve the combined issues of space appropriation and altered tooth morphology. This was followed with a session led by Dr Mario Semenza, who looked at a wide range of complex processes and techniques relating to indirect restorations.
Offering some helpful tips during his session in the afternoon, Dr Koray Feran urged delegates to allocate sufficient time to new patient examinations and consultations. Dr Luis Bessa brought the Annual Conference to an inspiring close with his session on managing dental implants in the aesthetic zone. He looked at how specific techniques can be combined with cutting-edge technology to facilitate more predictable, minimally invasive procedures.
As with all BACD events, the wealth of knowledge and expertise on offer at this year’s Annual Conference was unparalleled.
“The BACD Annual Conference 2019 has been another wonderful collection of superb clinicians sharing their knowledge,” said Dr Indra Rampersad.

Networking
As much a social event as an educational one, the BACD Sixteenth Annual Conference provided dental professionals an excellent opportunity to meet some of the industry’s most inspiring clinicians. The exclusive masquerade Gala Dinner proved to be a highlight of the conference, as delegates dressed to impress and donned their best mask for a night of wining, dining and dancing with friends and colleagues.
