Flexibility and adaptation – the new laws of dentistry

No one working within the dental profession is a stranger to change. The constantly evolving needs and demands of patients means that everyone from the dental practice team to the manufacturers and training providers supporting them have to adapt quickly and efficiently. That said, the speed with which changes had to be introduced to dentistry in the past few months was like nothing seen before. In fact, the events of 2020 have brought the need for flexibility and adaptation sharply into the spotlight.

We are all only too aware of the new protocols that were implemented in practices across the UK as they re-opened their doors and welcomed patients back. However, there will likely be more changes on the horizon as we settle into the latest way of doing things. Whether future adjustments are the result of regulations and guidelines, or are simply innovative ideas to streamline professional workflows and enhance patient care, it’s important that we all remain receptive to them.

Stay creative

With innovation at every turn, dentistry is all about finding creative ways to overcome new challenges and improve the patient care delivered. Practice life may be more stressful than normal at the moment, but don’t forget to take a little time out when you can to brainstorm new ideas for improving daily routines. You never know where inspiration might come from either, so being open to concepts and experiences from other industries could prove useful.

Listen to the team

Your team is still one of the most valuable assets of your dental practice. Ensure they have an opportunity and a platform to share their thoughts and suggestions. They might come up with a new way of doing something that could make a huge difference to the efficiency and productivity of your business. Getting your staff involved is also a great way of motivating them and encouraging a positive attitude, in turn creating a positive atmosphere for patients.

Manage emotions

This is not about stifling or ignoring your feelings and or those of others. Rather, it is about exercising what is often described as ‘emotional intelligence’. This requires the filtering and controlling of emotions in a constructive manner when in the workplace. An individual breaking down in tears in front of colleagues or patients will do no good for anyone in the vicinity. Instead, emotions should be channelled into finding solutions and innovating for the future. Providing opportunities for people to voice concerns in a safe and constructive way – away from patients – will make this easier and ensure everyone has the support that they need.

Cautious but confident

Following such a turbulent period, any further changes you or your team consider should be introduced gradually. You have enough to worry about without making life even more difficult with a new protocol or equipment that doesn’t work as it should! Any new changes therefore need to be implemented cautiously, so confidence can be built among the professional team and patients.

If you’re thinking about upgrading any technology or bringing in new products, or you just need some inspiration, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is the place for you. The next event will be held in May 2021, giving you plenty of time to settle into this ‘new normal’ before you start looking at the future. The educational programme will consist of lectures, live demonstrations and workshops presented by world-leading speakers who will explore the latest products, materials and technologies designed to enhance the quality and efficiency of care you deliver. There will also be an extensive trade floor with more than 400 dental manufacturers and suppliers to browse and interact with. Plus, with over 10,000 delegates expected to attend, this will be the perfect place to catch up with friends and colleagues after such a long time apart and to strength your professional network.

Change is life

John F Kennedy once said: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future”. Remaining flexible to change, adapting quickly to new situations and seizing opportunities will be crucial for businesses and individuals operating within the dental field. By keeping one eye on the future and embracing change when it knocks on the door, we can all move forward successfully.

The next British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show will be held on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd May 2021, Birmingham NEC, co-located with DTS.
