Protecting the gateway to the body

Oral health has a greater impact on general health than many patients might realise. The oral cavity boasts the second largest, most diverse microbiota after the gut, harbouring many different species of bacteria, viruses and fungi.[i] Good oral care – which includes daily toothbrushing and interdental cleaning – combined with the human body’s natural defences can keep the oral microbiome under control. However, without effective oral hygiene, potentially harmful microbes in the mouth can reach levels that might lead to an infection, which can spread to other parts of the body.

Studies have found that some diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe. Research has also indicated a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease, although this link is not yet fully understood.[ii] Any infection can ultimately put strain on the immune system and draw energy from the body, making patients more susceptible to additional health complications. If the mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body, protecting this gateway is essential. Dental professionals can help patients minimise their risk of infection by recommending Perio Plus+.

A recipe for success

Developed by Curaden, Perio Plus+ is an innovative range of products comprised of alcohol-free mouth rinses, toothpaste and gel. These are designed to support patients with acute dental problems and those at higher risk of oral disease. With solutions that are ideal for either short- or longer-term use, the Perio Plus+ product range is empowered by various ingredients, including:

  • Chlorhexidine (CHX) – The industry’s gold standard anti-plaque agent
  • CITROX® – A natural bioflavonoid extracted from bitter oranges
  • Polylysine amino acids – Ensures optimal adhesion of CITROX® within the oral cavity
  • PVP/VA – Forms a protective film over the teeth, gums and oral mucosa
  • Xylitol – A natural sweetener that prevents plaque adhesion to oral surfaces

Selected products from the Perio Plus+ range also offer the benefits of:

  • Cyclodextrins – A broad-spectrum anti-viral substance
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) – Supports accelerated wound healing

Featuring anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, CITROX® is combined with CHX to enhance its anti-plaque effects. This has created a unique formula that is scientifically proven to afford greater efficacy than CHX alone.[iii] As a result, Perio Plus+ provides powerful protection from diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. The longevity of Perio Plus+ is assured by polylysine amino acids, PVP-VA and xylitol, while HA moisturises the oral cavity and reduces inflammation to rapidly regenerate oral tissue. Cylcodextrins contained in Perio Plus+ also protect against viruses, ensuring further peace-of-mind that the product range can effectively combat infections.

Unique to dentistry

What distinguishes Perio Plus+ mouth rinses from traditional CHX products is a powerful combination of ingredients that has been developed by the experts at Givaudan to taste pleasant. Moreover, the unique qualities of this formula ensure a significantly reduced risk of adverse side effects such as discolouration, disrupted taste, and irritation of the oral mucosa. As such, Perio Plus+ encourages high patient compliance in order to ensure a truly successful treatment outcome. Suitable for a variety of different indications, the exceptional product range includes:

  • Perio Plus+ Forte (CHX 0.2%) mouth rinse

For short-term use prior to and after invasive dental procedures. Offers excellent microbial protection, preventing plaque formation and accumulation to effectively protect the oral cavity from disease.

  • Perio Plus+ Balance (CHX 0.05%) mouth rinse

Designed to complement daily oral hygiene by reducing the risk of caries and gingivitis. Ideal for patients who wear orthodontic appliances, and those suffering from treatment-related dry mouth or motor impairment.

  • Perio Plus+ Regenerate (CHX 0.09%) mouth rinse

Contains HA to promote optimal regeneration and stabilisation of oral tissues, reducing the risk of post-procedural complications.

  • Perio Plus+ Focus (CHX 0.5%) topical gel

Provides intensive care for targeted areas of the mouth. Contains HA to inhibit inflammation caused by dental implants and dentures, thereby protecting against periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

  • Perio Plus+ Support (CHX 0.09%) toothpaste

Free from sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) to ensure the success of CHX treatments. Contains sodium fluoride to protect against plaque. Optimised for use in conjunction with Perio Plus+ mouth rinses.

The ultimate dental adjunct

For patients who are more vulnerable to infection, Perio Plus+ is the ultimate adjunct to daily toothbrushing and interdental cleaning, as it can prevent oral disease and reduce the risk of more serious health problems throughout the body. By easing the microbial burden on the mouth, Perio Plus+ can also be used as a pre- and post-procedural mouth rinse, thereby boosting infection control processes and helping to minimise disease transmission in practice. Given the many benefits it affords, why not entrust Perio Plus+ to be the gatekeeper of the oral cavity?
