The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show recently collaborated with the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) on a webinar with Dr Debbie Reed entitled “Dental Nursing – A Historical Perspective”.
Debbie told the story of dental nursing over the past 100 years, sharing her findings from the extensive research of images, newspaper clippings, first-hand accounts and books from the past century for her recently awarded Doctorate in Education.
It became apparent that dentists have always worked with an assistant of some kind, though the role of the dental nurse wasn’t officially recognised until the 19th century. Debbie illustrated the fascinating evolution of dentistry in general, citing potential catalysts for changing attitudes towards dental nurses – and dental dressers – including the Dental Act 1921. Shortly after that, Debbie highlighted the relative silence around the role until the creation of the professional association, now called the British Association of Dental Nurses, in the 1940s.
It was made clear during Debbie’s session that the dental nurse’s role has remained integral to the provision of dental services for more than a century. It is true that first-class dentistry and patient care cannot be delivered even today without the skills and support of a dental nurse.
The next British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show will be held on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd May 2021, Birmingham NEC, co-located with DTS.
BADN will once again be chairing the Dental Nurses’ Forum, which will take the place of the National Dental Nursing Conference as part of their 80 + 1 celebrations.
