A new study[i] has found that ‘Perio plus regenerate’ mouthwash reduces SARS-CoV-2 viral load in saliva.

The multicentre, double-blind study evaluated adults aged 18-85 years from four French hospitals, all of whom were asymptomatic or showed mild clinical signs of COVID-19 (symptoms not including pneumonia) for less than 8 days. Participants were randomly organised into two groups, with one given a ß-cyclodextrin-citrox mouthwash (‘Perio plus regenerate’). Both groups received three 200ml medicine vials of ‘Perio plus regenerate’ or placebo mouthwash and were instructed to use 30ml of solution three times a day for one minute. Participants collected their own saliva as trained by nurses, just before the first, second and third mouth rinse on the first day.  Over the next six days, participants collected saliva samples at 3pm daily. Laboratory analysis determined viral count in each saliva sample.

The results

The study demonstrated that a single rinse of ß-cyclodextrin-citrox mouthwash significantly decreased the risk of SARS-CoV-2 contamination through saliva in patients with no to mild symptoms of COVID-19 4 hours after initial dose. The first rinse of the day substantially reduced the viral load detected, while follow up rinses maintained the low value – more effectively than the placebo.

There was a significant difference in viral load when comparing before and after mouth rinsing between the ‘Perio plus regenerate’ mouthwash and placebo group. Participants with the ß-cyclodextrin-citrox mouthwash also experienced a greater reduction in viral load throughout the seven days compared to the placebo group.

Applying to practice

While more research is needed to determine optimal mouthwash frequency and long-term impact of mouthwash use for reducing viral load in the oral cavity, initial results with ‘Perio plus regenerate’ are very promising!

As such, introducing a ß-cyclodextrin-citrox mouthwash such as ‘Perio plus’ could prove advantageous in minimising the risk of COVID-19 transmission through saliva in dental patients. It is just one more way of optimising safety standards and protecting both the dental team and patients for total peace of mind.

From a practical perspective, it is also a very simple and easy to implement step for patients to take prior to a dental appointment. The mouthwash can be used a few hours before a visit to the practice, and/or recommended for the 7 days following treatment to support the prevention of infection for successful healing.

The ‘Perio plus’ range of mouth rinses, toothpaste and gel feature a unique formulation containing CitroxÒ – a natural bioflavonoid extracted from bitter oranges. This is combined with chlorhexidine (CHX) to offer even more powerful plaque-fighting benefits than CHX alone.
