Together Oral-B and Sir Mo are on mission to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and get the nation to #BrushLikeAProPrepLikeMo

Sir Mo Farah paid a surprise visit to Thomas Tallis School in Eltham, South-East London, to educate the year 8 students about the importance of good oral health.

The visit came after research, commissioned by Oral B, found that one in three children have experienced teeth and dental problems since the start of the pandemic, such as bleeding gums, tooth ache and cavities. The research also revealed:

  • A staggering one in three children have experienced dental issues during the pandemic, leading to 22% of parents having to remove teeth, fit temporary fillings or fix braces
  • 31% of parents also admitted that their children sometimes go to school having not brushed their teeth
  • Nearly half of children (44%) will avoid brushing their teeth at all costs, leading to 31% of parents resorting to bribery, offering their kids rewards for a good toothbrush, incl. a later bedtime in exchange for a 2 minute brush, offering more TV time or playing games
  • Sir Mo knows first-hand about the importance of keeping teeth in tip top condition after his own oral health issue resulted in him being admitted to hospital and missing a period of training.

Mo explains: “A few years ago I had nasty dental issue that meant I was unable to train at a key time. It made me realise just how important oral health is, not only for the benefit of your teeth and gums, but also for your overall health.”

Mo was accompanied to the school by Oral B Dentist Jaz Gulati. Together they hosted an assembly, providing information and tips on how the children can improve their own oral health at home. Each of the 270 children in attendance was gifted an Oral-B electric toothbrush, toothpaste and floss so they could put into practice what they learned.

Oral health doesn’t only affect the mouth, it can impact overall body health. To bring this message home, Mo also hosted a PE lesson with a small group of pupils. Sir Mo said “Recognising oral care is a key part of my physical well-being, my coaches and I had to reassess how I managed my oral health and as part of this my dentist recommended that I switch to an Oral B electric toothbrush for better plaque removal.”

The UK has a long history of poor oral health, with the majority of Brits seeing the dentist less frequently than recommended and following poor routines at home, and with restricted access to dental care and disrupted routines throughout the pandemic, those adults surveyed shone a light on their own dental health with 44% confirming theirs has deteriorated more than usual, since March 2020.
