It’s never been clearer how important the ‘business’ of dentistry is. A successful practice will deliver quality treatment and care, that’s a given. But a truly exceptional one will also be a great business.

It will run efficiently, and be on top of its admin and regulatory obligations. It will be profitable, allowing it to improve services even further. It will have a commitment to protecting the wellbeing of every member of the team, as well as giving them the opportunity to carve out a fulfilling career.

A successful dental practice will understand that it is also a local business, and be focused on meeting the specific needs of its community, so that people can enjoy healthier, happier lives. This community is likely its main recruitment pool too, even more reason to aspire to being a brilliant place to work.

If you’re a practice owner or manager, or have ambitions to be one, this could make you feel overwhelmed, inspired – or somewhere in between! So, connecting with others in the industry has never been more important.

That’s why dental events continue to be crucial, giving all professionals a way to step back and gain fresh perspectives. As well as discovering new ideas, your attendance will enable you to share your successes with likeminded professionals, which is both hugely rewarding and can help you broaden your network.

Even if you have weathered the storms the 2020s keep sending our way and feel confident you’re ready for anything, a successful business will constantly be anticipating change. The British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show has always been a place where the whole industry comes together to celebrate success and look forward. It is a place to predict and explore future trends, not just in new tools and materials, but also the challenges which could impact on the delivery of care.

At the 2022 event, the theme of recruitment and retention loomed large. As we head into what looks like being a tough winter for the UK – with the cost-of-living crisis beginning to bite – we can expect this to be an ongoing concern for businesses next year and beyond. Dental practices are trying to create and keep talented teams, at a time when growing numbers of people are leaving dentistry for roles that offer less stress for the same (if not more) money.

Maintaining a happy work environment is key to productivity, a quality service and satisfied and loyal patients – three things you need for a successful business. We all know how it feels when someone wonderful leaves and it changes the practice dynamic, or when the wrong person has been hired, which is miserable all round. Next year, the discussion about how to find the right people – and keep them – is set to continue. Practice owners and managers will need to think about things like career progression and quality training, and how to reassess their recruitment protocols by potentially looking outside dentistry. Also, whether the team is structured in a way that meets the specific needs of their patient base. Do people want more hygiene appointments than you currently offer, for example?

Wellbeing at work is also a hot topic, and practice owners and managers must ensure people know they can talk to someone if they’re feeling low and unable to do their job properly, whatever the reason may be. But they also need to respect how there will be others who prefer to maintain boundaries. For a successful business, owners and managers must know how to take care of themselves too!

A brilliant team, that patients love coming to see, will give your practice the best chance of success, allowing it to grow and thrive. This is why premium dental events always include business-focused lecture streams. As well as recruitment issues, you will get the chance to learn about how to improve your efficiency, as well as the best equipment and consumables to invest in, for better value as well as beautiful and enduring results.

Dentistry is still very much an exciting place to be, full of wonderful people united by one goal, to help as many of the population as possible to enjoy a better quality of life. So, despite the challenges, you must try to resist being overwhelmed by anything that makes running a practice less rewarding – and fun!

One great strength of BDCDS is its sense of energy and positivity, as well as community. It is the best of what our industry has to offer. It is where you can learn, discover, share, celebrate, consolidate and look forward, and come home full of fresh ideas to take to your practice, ready for whatever lies ahead.
