As anyone who works in clinical dentistry will tell you, dentists work hard for their money. It’s a high-stress occupation, dealing with things like difficult patients and industry regulation. After leaving dental school, you soon discover that you need to keep investing into your career, by paying for expensive further training. The options for postgraduate education can seem overwhelming. But choose wisely and it will open up a range of opportunities to keep you motivated and maximise your earning potential, too.

Having the skills and knowledge to deliver high-demand treatments is the key to optimising revenue and job satisfaction. Dentists with the capacity to do more, help more people achieve a better quality of life. They build a team around them, in practices that are thriving. Their patients are loyal, appreciating the fact that they won’t necessarily have to be referred out, for something beyond general dentistry.

If you have invested in dental implant training, these therapies require an elevated hygiene programme to keep the result stable. This means involving the dental nurse, dental hygienist and/or therapist right from the planning stage so they get to know the patient, understand their goals and any factors that could compromise the outcome. An implant dentist needs patients to say “yes”, so you’ll have to be an effective communicator and be able to lead a team. Be open to the fact that the skills and knowledge you need will be honed throughout your career. Dr Fazeela Khan-Osborne is the founding clinician of the FACE dental implant multi-disciplinary team for the One To One Dental Clinic based on Harley Street, London. She has always had a passion and special interest in implant dentistry, particularly in surgical and restorative full arch rehabilitation of the maxilla. She has been involved in developing treatment modalities for peri-implantitis within clinical practice.

 Dr Khan-Osborne is also the Founding Course Lead for the One To One Education Programme, now in its 20thyear. As a former Lead Tutor on the Diploma in Implant Dentistry course at the Royal College of Surgeons (England), she lectures worldwide on implant dentistry and is an active full member of the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
